U.S. intelligence monitoring North Korean data.
North Korean leader Kim Jong Un missed the massive national celebration on April 15 known as the “Day of the Sun,” that acknowledges the birthday of Kim’s grandfather, Kim Il Sung. It is the nation’s most important national holiday, and the absence of the leader has caused many to question his health.
The U.S. is monitoring intelligence that suggests Kim is in grave danger after undergoing surgery. A U.S. official with direct intelligence and a second source have confirmed the U.S. is closely monitoring reports on his health. Another said concerns about Kim’s health are credible but the severity is hard to assess.
National Security Advisor Robert O’Brien said “We’re monitoring these reports very closely. As you know, North Korea is a very closed society.”
A South Korean online newspaper that focuses on the North reports that Kim received a cardiovascular system procedure on April 12, because of “excessive smoking, obesity, and overwork,” and that he is receiving rehabilitative treatment in a countryside villa.
President Trump said he doesn’t know whether the North Korean dictator is ill. “I can only say this, I wish him well,” the president said. Asked whether he would attempt to contact Kim during this reported period of convalescence, President Trump said, “I may. I just hope he’s doing fine.”
